How will you include Mayer’s principle of active processing in your authentic assessment activity? What kind of product will your participants create to demonstrate their learning using multimedia technology?
Mayer’s (2009) principle of active processing assumes, “that humans actively engage in cognitive processing in order to construct a coherent mental representation of their experience” (Active-Processing Assumption, para. 1). In order to help the workshop participants make sense of what they have learned, I will have them complete an authentic assessment activity which will involve using the technology introduced in the workshop. The activity will engage the participants behaviorally and cognitively and allow them to connect more deeply with the content by applying the learning to solve an authentic problem.
What kind of multimedia presentation must you create to effectively present key concepts and skills to your participants (video, PowerPoint, podcast, screencast, interactive tutorial, or other)? How will you include Mayer’s principles of dual coding and limited capacity in your presentation?
I will use a PowerPoint presentation converted to a video to present the learning to the participants of my workshop. The presentation of words and pictures should satisfy Mayer’s (2009) principle of dual coding. The sensory-modality approach of my multimedia presentation will feed into the participants’ visual and auditory channels for processing information. The idea is that the participants receive data through the eyes and ears simultaneously and integrate the visual and auditory learning with prior knowledge gained from pre-training in order to produce learning in working memory. The principle of limited capacity claims that individuals can only process limited amounts of data via both channels. Keeping these constraints in mind, I will offer a pre-training module so that the participants will not exhaust cognitive sensibilities trying to make sense of new concepts and not have enough capacity to apply metacognitive strategies to make sense of key concepts. The pre-training strategy will also help participants to relate the new knowledge to relevant prior knowledge. I will utilize graphic organizers to help participants select relevant information, and finally, I will organize the content in a meaningful way in efforts to get the participants, “to engage in essential and generative processing... to construct a meaningful learning outcome that enables both good retention and good transfer performance” (Generative Cognitive Processing, para. 1).
What kind of graphic organizer would be best to give your participants to help facilitate learning in your workshop?
I believe that a bubble chart will best help my participants to organize their thoughts, make sense of the learning, and pinpoint the key concepts of the information presented in the workshop.
What concepts in your presentation will require pre-training before you begin the workshop? How will you use multimedia to engage your learners during the pre-training phase?
I feel that certain terms may be new to some or all of the participants of the workshop. Technology, like most disciplines has its own unique language. In order to introduce the participants to difficult terms and concepts, I have included a pre-training module in the workshop. I will introduce difficult terms prior to the workshop presentation so that my participants will not utilize most of their cognitive processing capacity trying to define terms, leaving little cognitive capacity for processing the essential content of the workshop. I will utilize a multimedia tool which will allow the participants to access online flashcards to access the meaning of words which they will then use to complete a graphic organizer.
What equipment will you need to conduct your workshop (projector, laptops for each pair of participants, Internet connections, other)?
I will use a projector and laptop to broadcast my multimedia presentation during the informational session. The participants will then use their laptops, smart phones, or tablet pcs to complete the authentic assessment activity during the afternoon session. I will have an IT professional available for any participant who may need assistance or in the event of any technical difficulties. I will also have the assistance of a local entrepreneur who utilizes the software we will be using for the assessment activity to help walk participants through the activity, and to answer any questions during the discussion segment.
What online applications might you use?
Quizlet and Armored Penguin for the pre-training activity.
Power Point for the content of the presentation.
Camtasia Studio for all screen cast tutorials and Power Point recording.
Wave Accounting for the activity.
Youtube for displaying all tutorials and video multimedia.
How will your participants collaborate on their projects? How will you group them to create authentic assessment in your workshop?
I will separate participants into teams of 3 and have the teams work in the application simultaneously to actively illustrate that Wave Accounting is user-friendly and can be accessed from separate laptops, tablets, and/or smart phone devices by multiple users at once. In effect, the activity will enable participants to create and collaborate, and show how these traits may be fostered in their employees.
